Tornado – the Perfect Storm for Green Building

CB034170In May 2007, a tornado leveled the Town of Greensburg, Kansas.

The town viewed the destruction as an opportunity and went to work rebuilding with an emphasis on green, clean technologies.

Now, two years later, the town has emerged as a model for sustainable living with economic development as fringe benefits.

The town has developed all kinds of cool partnerships, promoting eco-homes along with a 10MW wind farm to provide clean energy and spurring eco–tourism in the Midwest.

The Town’s pro-active modern stance on redevelopment has led to a partnership with the Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Kansas Building Industry Association and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) to enable worker training, according to the recently released NAHB – National Green Building Standards. These workers will be employed for Greenburg town rebuilding efforts.

Seems like the green building and associated job training sector is expanding with many different training and certification program options. Looks like NREL is promoting the NAHB National Green Building Standards.

“Somewhere over the Rainbow…..”.
